Custom Flintknapping Tools

My name is Richard (Dick) Woolheater.

After reading parts of J. C. Whittaker's book and hitting a few rocks in the early 1990s, I became very confused and gave up. But my curiousity about how Native Americans fashioned those beautiful stone tools remained.

Retired after 35 years in areospace engineering and a later career as a math and science teacher. Moved to Georgetown in 2003 and had more free time. 

I have since taken lessons from Bill Metcalfe and am now attending weekly sessions at the Kylberg barn north of Georgetown. These  experiences have been very rewarding. But, as everyone knows, there is no substitute for PRACTICE.

Publications by D.C. Waldorf and Bob Patten have also been valuable resources. Videos by Woody Blackwell, Bruce Bradley, Marty Reuter and others  have been very helpful.

The opportunity to observe some of the real artists active today and hear stories about pioneers of knapping have inspired me to keep going; I usually burn out on hobbies much sooner than this.

Have gotten to a point (no pun intended) where I can consistently make preforms and acceptable points and knives. Still no works of art. Along the way I've experimented with knapping tools.

What is offered here is the result of my continuing journey.

OUR BUSINESS

Fall of 2007 I attended a small knap-in of only about 15 knappers. At that time I had a very limited inventory and was not ready to market my hafted billets.

But I showed my tools to some of my acquaintences; to my amazement, I sold 7 tools that day. That got my attention.

I needed a website. Ordered more copper rod (BOY, has it gotten out of sight!!) Contacted my machinist. And now I'm hoping that you can benefit from my experience.

At the present time I am CFT. However, if the products become as popular as I think they will, I'll need to take on help.
